Chianti bus fares

The blue regional buses still go to Greve and Siena, they just cost more since August. Here are the real fares, where to catch them, and when a tour is the better deal.

Autolinee Toscane (AT), the company that runs every regional bus in Tuscany, raised its fares on 1 August 2026. Florence city tickets went from EUR 1.70 to EUR 2.00, and the out-of-town fares that matter for a Chianti day went up by about 18%.

Below are the prices from AT's official fare table, the two lines most visitors use (365 to Greve, 131R to Siena), how to pay without paying extra, and the maths against a tour.

The quick answer

A single ticket from Florence to Greve in Chianti now costs about EUR 5.90 (band 4, 30 to 40 km), or EUR 9 if you buy from the driver. Florence to Siena on the fast 131R is EUR 9.90 (fast band 7), EUR 16 from the driver. Pay in the at bus app or tap a contactless card, and tap again when you get off. Line 365 runs only six buses each way on Sundays and none on Christmas Day or New Year's Day.

How much is the bus from Florence to Greve in Chianti from August 2026?

EUR 5.90 one way for band 4 (30 to 40 km), up from EUR 5. Buying on board costs EUR 9, and a 4-ride carnet is EUR 18.70.

Extra-urban tickets are priced by distance in 10 km bands. AT's fare table valid from 1 August 2026 sets the single ticket, the driver price and the 4-ride carnet for each band. A 2023 answer on the Discover Tuscany forum put Greve at about 35 km and EUR 5 under the old table, which was the band 4 price. That band now costs EUR 5.90. Panzano, further on, may fall in the next band.

The at bus app and journey planner show the exact band for the two stops you pick, so check there before you buy a paper ticket. A return to Greve for two people comes to EUR 23.60.

Where does bus 365 to Greve leave from, and how often does it run?

Most 365 buses via Strada in Chianti leave from Hub Montelungo by the Fortezza da Basso and reach Greve in about 50 minutes. Weekdays are busy; Sundays have six buses.

Since September 2022 AT has split its Florence departures between three hubs. Its hub map puts Greve and Radda via Strada in Chianti at Hub Montelungo, a short walk from Santa Maria Novella station, and the runs via Ferrone at Terminal Vittorio Veneto by the Cascine. Piazzale Montelungo is the same square where the Gray Line wine tour meets, which tells you something about how many people make this trip.

The winter timetable, valid from 5 October 2026, takes about 50 to 55 minutes from Montelungo to Greve Piazza Trento, and most buses carry on to Panzano. On weekdays there are departures through the day, many tied to school hours. On Sundays and holidays there are six, and the last ones back leave the Greve area in the late afternoon. Miss it and you are paying for a taxi.

How much is the 131R bus from Florence to Siena, and how long does it take?

EUR 9.90 on the fast fare (band 7, 60 to 70 km), up from EUR 8.40. From the driver it is EUR 16. The ride takes about 75 minutes.

Florence to Siena has its own fast fare table in AT's August 2026 tariff, headed "Siena - Firenze e Grosseto - Siena - Firenze". Band 7 of that table, the one that has long covered this trip, went from EUR 8.40 to EUR 9.90. AT's ticket FAQ says to buy a fast extra-urban ticket, which is valid on both the direct 131R and the stopping 131.

The 131R timetable from 5 October 2026 leaves Firenze Autostazione, the bus station on Via Santa Caterina da Siena beside Santa Maria Novella, and reaches Siena's Via Tozzi and Piazza San Domenico about 75 minutes later. Weekday buses run about hourly. Sunday is thinner: departures from Florence at 9:10, 14:10, 15:10, 17:20, 18:10 and 19:10. Siena is not in Chianti, by the way. The Classico zone starts just north of the city, and the half day from Siena is the easy way into it from there.

How do you buy the ticket: app, contactless or on board?

Use the at bus app or tap a contactless card on the validator, and tap again when you get off. Buying from the driver costs much more, and old-fare tickets expire on 31 January 2027.

Your options, cheapest first:

  • The at bus app sells extra-urban tickets for your exact stops. Activate the ticket as you board.
  • Tip Tap contactless works with Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards and phone wallets on almost every bus. On regional lines you tap twice, on and off. AT's contactless FAQ warns that if you forget to tap off you pay "the maximum fare, i.e., up to the terminus". One card buys one ticket, so couples need two cards or two phones.
  • Blink lets one person buy up to 10 digital tickets and send them to the group.
  • Tabacchi and AT ticket offices sell paper tickets. Stamp them on board.
  • The driver sells tickets only when it is safe to do so, at EUR 9 instead of EUR 5.90 to Greve, and does not have to give change.

SMS tickets work only on city buses, not on the 365 or 131R. If you have paper tickets bought before 1 August, use them: they are valid until 31 January 2027, and from 1 February 2027 AT fines anyone travelling on them.

Bus or tour: which is the better deal for a Chianti tasting?

For one town and one winery, the bus wins on price. For two estates in the hills with food, a tour costs little more and nobody has to watch the clock or the timetable.

The bus gets you to Greve's main square and no further. Most wineries sit up dirt roads that no bus touches. With bus fares at EUR 11.80 per person return, a do-it-yourself day works if you stay in town: the self-service cellar Le Cantine di Greve, or the Brogioni winery tasting at $57 on Via San Cresci. Check the last bus first, especially on a Sunday.

The Gray Line half day costs from $62 and adds two wineries, three or four wines with food at each, and a coach back to Piazzale Montelungo. Our view: the bus is fine for a slow day in Greve, the tour is better value for a first tasting. And skip the rental car either way: Italy's limit is 0.5 g/l, zero for new drivers. More options in our guide to Chianti without a car.
